The US equivalent to the Red Skull was Captain America, and cannily the Skull and the Captain became archenemies. Exposed to a experimental gas vapors, the Red Skull was preserved (though ultimately imperfectly) just like Captain America. Later, the Skull would establish himself as a modern-day villain, although, generally speaking, most of his fellow super villains regard him with contempt.
