Attack on Titan is a Japanese manga series written
and illustrated
by Hajime Isayama. The series began serialization i
n Kodansha's
Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine on September 9, 2009, and
has been
collected into 12 tankōbon volumes as of December 9
, 2013. It is
set in a world where humanity lives inside cities s
urrounded by
enormous walls due to the Titans, gigantic humanoid
creatures
who devour humans seemingly without reason. The sto
ry centers
on Eren Yeager, his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman
, and their
friend Armin Arlert, whose lives are changed foreve
r after the
appearance of a Colossus Titan brings about the des
truction of
their home town and the death of Eren's mother. Vow
ing
revenge and to reclaim the world from the Titans, E
ren, Mikasa
and Armin enlist in the Military and join the Scout
Regiment—an
elite group of soldiers who fight Titans outside th
e walls.
Levi is known as humanity's most powerful soldier an
d head of an
elite squad in the Survey Corps. He is a clean-frea
k. While it is said
that he is blunt and unapproachable, it is noted th
at he has a strong
respect for authority, structure and discipline. De
spite his strict
nature he cares very much for his underlings and te
am mates. He
was shown to be deeply affected by the deaths of hi
s Special
Operations squad. The sidestory Attack on Titan: A
Choice With No
Regrets focuses on Levi's origins, revealing that h
e was part of a
band of thieves using the Vertical Maneuvering Equi
pment to
commit crimes before he is scouted by Erwin to join
the army.
Captain Ackerman later notes that the capture of Er
en and Krista
has to do with Levi, whom he refers to as "Levi Ack
erman". Levi was
modeled after the Watchmen character Rorschachand i
s named
after a child Isayama noticed in the documentary Je
sus Camp
